Gluten-Free Cinnamon Rolls, Orange Rolls, and Sticky Buns!

One of my favorite childhood memories is eating sweet rolls. I especially liked the orange danish sweet rolls! They were a special treat that we had on occasion.

Until today, eating one makes me feel loved. When I was diagnosed with food allergies, especially gluten intolerance, I mourned the loss of my beloved sweet rolls.

Thankfully, we can make gluten-free cinnamon rolls, orange danish rolls, and stick buns at home. We also limit our intake of several types of food, so these recipes have vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free, and nut-free variations. We still reserve them as a special treat in our home, but I so happy to have them back in my life.

What is Gluten Intolerance?

Not everyone will benefit from a gluten-free diet (see how it affects our health). If you’re searching for this, you probably already know this. But, if you are new to it, then it’s worth knowing some basics. I suggest reading about celiac disease or watching this quick video:

Are these really gluten-free cinnamon rolls? And, the others?

Yes, they are.

Some suggest making your gluten-free flour from scratch. To do so, you can blend ¼ cup white rice flour, ¼ cup tapioca flour, ½ cup potato starch, and 1 ½ cups brown rice flour.

We prefer to buy our gluten-free flour. We like this one from Bob’ Red Mill.  With some gluten-free flours you need to modify the recipe to accommodate its differences. With this flour, though, you pretty much do not need to modify your recipe. Hence, it’s name 1-to-1 baking flour.

Also, yeast can contain gluten. To avoid this potential complication, we use this one.

In case you were wondering, baking powder is always gluten-free. So, no need to do anything special here to be gluten-free.

With these substitutions, these sweet rolls will now be gluten-free.

Are these rolls vegan or vegetarian?

Each of these recipes can be made either way by substituting the egg, milk, and butter. We tend to make the vegetarian versions, but the following conversions should work:

  • 1 Egg = X Flax or 1/4 cup aquafaba
  • 1 cup milk = X cup of almond milk = X cup of oat milk
  • 1 tablespoon butter = X tablespoon ghee

Are these rolls dairy-free?

Correct again! We want everyone to enjoy our recipes.

Are these rolls nut-free?

Yes! You betcha! (that’s a nod to all of you in the Midwest)
