Is It Safe to Use Teflon Frying Pans?
Teflon, a common non-stick coating, used to contain a dangerous chemical called PFOA.
As of 2013, PFOA is no longer in Teflon, so it’s considered safer than it used to be.
Even so, at extremely high temperatures (570 degrees Fahrenheit), Teflon can break up into dangerous chemicals.
With cooking eggs, you won’t get to that temperature, though, so using a Teflon-coated pan is perfectly safe for your eggs.
That said, we do not use anything with Teflon in our house. I have reviewed both types of pans in this article, though, since you have to make the decision that is right for you.
Why Do Eggs Stick to the Pan?
Some egg pans have a non-stick coating.
If not, there are a couple of easy-to-make mistakes that could cause scrambled or fried eggs to stick to the pan:
- The egg frying pan isn’t non-stick
- You didn’t use oil or butter
- The pan wasn’t hot enough when you added the eggs
- You cooked over high heat instead of medium heat
How Do You Get Burnt Eggs off a Non-Stick Pan?
Despite the frying pan being easy to clean, you may find yourself with an eggy mess of a pan, so be aware that you can’t scrub the non-stick surface like you would an old-school fry pan.
Instead, try this:
- Run the frying pan immediately under cold water and scrape off as much of the mess as you can with a wooden or silicone spatula
- Fill the pan with boiling water and dishwashing liquid and leave it to soak for a few minutes before washing it like normal
If you end up with a hard, stuck eggy crust on the frying pan surface the next morning, then try this method:
- Make a thick paste from baking soda and water
- Spread it on the crust and leave to air-dry
- Once it’s dry, scrape it off the pan with a non-abrasive utensil
- Wash the pan like normal
How to Fry an Egg: Step by Step
Here’s a quick, simple tutorial for frying an egg.
I find it works best to crack the eggs into separate bowls at the start.
If you’re fast enough and clean enough, then you can crack them directly into the pan (I do this using the inside “wall” of the pan), but be warned… this method does not always end well. It’s a risk I willing to take, though!
- Heat a little oil or butter in a pan on medium heat
- Add your eggs to your egg fry pan, one by one
- Once the edges of your eggs have turned white, cover the frying pan with the lid and turn the heat down a little
- Cook them like this for about 4 minutes (for a runny yolk), 5 minutes (for a soft yolk), or 6 minutes (for a hard yolk)
- Remove from the pan, season, and serve!
